What is Olive Pomace Oil?
Did anyone else think it was spelled pummus? Like hummus with a P?
Maybe you’ve heard of Olive Pomace Oil… but maybe you haven’t!! In the past it’s kind of gotten a bad reputation, but we say it’s just misunderstood. We gave Olive Pomace Oil a makeover of sorts (hi Frizzle!!) to make it chemical-free, buttery and delicious. Here’s why (and how!) we did it…
How Is Olive Pomace Oil Made?
When our Extra Virgin Olive Oil is pressed, there's a whole lot of byproduct olive mush (basically tapenade) left over after production. This mush (also called pomace) can’t be pressed again for EVOO, BUT there’s still a lot of good stuff in there! So, we press it again. Then we add a little bit of heat to remove any impurities. Finally, Olive Pomace Oil is made! This process is not only a great way to re-use and reduce the waste of the first pressing, but also means that our Olive Pomace Oil (FRIZZLE!!) still retains some of the antioxidants and polyphenols we know and love in our EVOO.
However, not all Pomace Oil is made that way!! More often than not, Pomace Oil is refined and extracted in a very similar way to seed oils — aka using a lot of chemicals, solvents, and deodorizers that we wouldn’t necessarily want in our food.
How Does it Compare to Other Olive Oils?
Firstly, Pomace Oil has a higher smoke point (up to 490ºF to be specific). Ours is naturally refined, so it can really withstand some heat. This makes it an excellent option for frying, searing, and crisping!
Secondly, Pomace Oil will always have a more mild, neutral flavor. Since it’s a second pressing of olives, it doesn’t retain the same robust olive-y flavor that EVOO does. It’s neutral, and in our case, buttery and delicious! But also won’t overpower a recipe.
Is It Good For You?
Yes!! If you can find a naturally refined, chemical, solvent, and additive free Pomace Oil made from 100% olives *cough cough Frizzle*, you’ll be able to enjoy a neutral high heat cooking oil full of omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids plus some heart-healthy antioxidants. Frizzle > vegetable oil, canola oil, and avocado oil (that’s usually made from grade D avocados anyways).
Is Frizzle Olive Pomace Oil???
Yep—Our take on Pomace Oil, to be exact: naturally refined, chemical-free, and made from 100% olives. Plus Frizzle has a *little* bit of EVOO for an extra antioxidant boost and a *hint* of flavor :-)
