How to Shuck
This guide is adapted from this OG handy dandy how-to by our friends at Island Creek Oysters (they're the experts!). Get ready to impress with your newfound skills - you'll be popping open shellfish all summer just like this adorable little otter.
It's simple, but you're gonna need oysters of your choosing, a protective glove, and shucking knife. Now LETS GET SHUCKING!!!!!
STEP 1: POKE
Hold the oyster in the palm of your gloved hand, with the hinge (that sweet spot where the two halves of the shell come together) facing towards you. POKE the tip of your knife into the hinge at a 45 degree angle.
STEP 2: WIGGLE WIGGLE
Using a little pressure (don't use too much force here), WIGGLE the knife forward. It's basically the same hand movement as revving a motorcycle or twisting a Bop-It. Twist until you've loosened the hinge.
STEP 3: POP
You should feel the shell POP as it opens.
Warning! Avoid pushing the knife too deep so you don't cut the tasty oyster inside.
STEP 4: SLIDEEEE
Holding the oyster in your gloved hand, gently SLIDE the knife underneath the top shell. Move around the whole shell to sever the top abductor muscle from the top shell completely. Then slide the knife under the oyster meat to separate the bottom abductor muscle from the shell.
STEP 5: SLURP UP!
Congrats!!!!!!! You've got an open oyster! Top with your favorite toppings of choice (we like a healthy dose of Drizzle and fresh lemon juice) or throw 'em on the grill with some Sizzle, and SLURP UP!
